Spidey's ran out of web fluid.
Everyone's favourite super hero has always had an easy time when it comes to video games. His first outing on the playstation was an instant hit, and so was his next. He's been successfully web-swinging since the age of game boy, and no one has ever got tired of him. On this occasion, however, Spidey seems to have been let down somewhat. You'd think mforma would know their way around developing a game based on a Marvel comic, wouldn't you? They were the ones responsible for blade trinity and fantastic four, after all. But the case here isn't lack of gameplay. Its the evident lack of ideas. The game takes after the console version of the same name, giving you the choice to play as either spider man or Venom, his symbiote-enhanced arch nemesis. However, the story, or lack thereof, does not change, whichever character you play as. Playing as web head, your only goal throughout 12 levels is to keep civilians safe from venom, while at the same time trying to defeat him, and dodge local gangsters. Playing as Venom, for 12 levels you must find and kill spider man, and feed on citizens to maintain your health, while dodging local police and rogue gangsters. The problem is that this is the only thing you will be asked to do throughout the whole game. As a result, you'll feel like ure playing one level, over and over again, the only change being in the background. Like every game, though, it's not without its good points: both Spider man and Venom enjoy their best graphical representation on a mobile ever; animation is great, compared to the last spider man game on mobile, which was, suffice to say, appalling. You'll also find that each of the games 24 levels are huge, consisting of more than one screens worth of area to explore. Both spidey and Venom also have "Spider-sense", which shows where your arch nemesis is. The comic book style onomatopoeias (Smack! Crack! etc.) provide a nice, nostalgic edge. As for the settings, the game takes place in the not-so-friendly-neighbourhood of New York, swarming with innocent citizens, infested with various thugs and gangsters, and a weak police force trying to keep the peace. You'll be fighting in office buildings, construction sites and by the dead of night - over and over again. Theres also only one theme in the whole game, which is played in a continuous loop, and no audio for fighting. Overall, Ultimate Spider-Man is, sadly, quite a let down. True, its entertaining for about a half hour but, before long, youll be wondering when you can web-sling out of it.
